The Learning Alliance is a non-profit organization founded by a group of civic-minded parents who recognize that many children are not learning to read using traditional educational methods. Currently, 24% of third graders and 43% of eighth graders in Indian River County are failing to pass the reading portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (“FCAT”). This failure naturally inhibits their ability to proceed with their education, and it creates numerous problems for their teachers, the public school system, and society as a whole.

We formed The Learning Alliance with the goal of making Indian River County the literacy capital of the world!
Recently, researchers have discovered amazing details about how the brain processes sounds and words to produce speech and develop reading ability. And those discoveries have been integrated into new teaching methods that will enable virtually all students, even struggling ones, to learn to read. To bring these new methods to Indian River County teachers, we are working with nationally-recognized literacy experts such as Arlene Sonday and Barbara Wilson. We have also developed strong partnerships with local schools, as well as a number of colleges and universities.
