Transforming Lives Through Literacy

“Human kind’s most precious asset is our children, and our children are our future.”

-Barbara Hammond (The Learning Alliance’s CEO and Co-Founder)

The Learning Alliance is committed to creating a smarter community for today’s readers and tomorrow’s leaders. This commitment is strengthened through our Early Literacy Model, encompassing four areas of impact:

Excellence in Teaching

The number one predictor of student achievement is teacher quality. Working in tandem with the School District of Indian River County, we provide impactful and relevant learning experiences that empower teachers and school leadership to achieve exceptional results. Through changing the lives of our educators, we are changing the lives of students.

Excellence in Teaching Programs:

  • Literacy coaches on every elementary school campus supporting K-2 educators
  • District-wide professional development to ensure K-3 educators and leaders have the knowledge and skills to support effective reading instruction
  • Early Literacy Specialists supporting all K-2 Coaches and Interventionists

Extended Learning for Students

The Learning Alliance’s Extended Learning Programs provide PreK-3rd grade students structured and targeted intervention beyond the traditional school day to close literacy gaps. These enrichment programs not only provide students the foundational tools they need but also instill an environment of success, building confidence, trust in literacy and hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Extended Learning Programs:

  • Moonshot Academy, an afterschool and summer program on six district campuses and through an online curriculum, offers small group & individual support
  • K-3 interventionists provide struggling students small-group instruction every day in school district classrooms
  • Volunteer Pre-K programming ensures that students are ready for kindergarten
  • Tune into Reading, a remote learning, tablet-based reading program provided to struggling readers increases reading fluency and comprehension

Building an Engaged Community

Schools can’t do it alone, and we know that community engagement is vital in ensuring that they don’t have to. That is why The Learning Alliance created the Moonshot Community Action Network (MCAN) to garner the collective impact necessary to affect systems change and achieve the Moonshot Moment goal of 90% literacy by the end of 3rd grade.

Growing from 15 members in 2009 to over 125 members today, TLA is the backbone organization of MCAN which has garnered recognition both nationally and internationally for our work in Indian River County.

Community Engagement Programs:

  • Moonshot Community Action Network
  • Moonshot Bookmobile
  • Moonshot Rocket
  • Moonshot Reading Captains

Empowering Families Through Literacy

Through The Learning Alliance’s Moonshot Families (MSF) Early Learning programs, we empower adults to be their child’s first teacher by providing support and connecting them to resources in underserved communities. Parent engagement opportunities, books, learning kits and literacy activities, support learning so that all children arrive ready for kindergarten.

Family Outreach Programs:

  • Family Connection Centers in Fellsmere and Gifford
  • Read, Talk, Play, Sing, Create activities, community events, books and Learning Kits
  • Assistance navigating Early Childcare, PreK and Kindergarten enrollment
