Learning a Love for Literacy (Even in the Summer)

Throughout the school year, our students work hard to learn multiple subjects, perform well on tests, and still have extracurricular activities and family time. Summer break is necessary, especially for younger students. Summer is also the perfect time to explore more interests, foster new social connections, and build on existing skills. In fact, research shows that children who have enriching, structured summer activities can demonstrate higher academic achievement and social-emotional well being. For families whose students already struggle academically, summer can be a concerning time, with fears of learning loss dampening the fun.
To help families both create those enriching, structured experiences and build on the skills that their students worked to develop, The Learning Alliance offers multiple summer learning programs, including activities at our Connection Centers and community events.
The Summer Moonshot Academy is a by-invite-only four-week literacy program held in June for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders aimed at building on and improving students’ reading skills. Invited students receive 90 minutes of intensive reading/writing instruction and 90 minutes of whole-group language/reading comprehension instruction each day. Another two hours of each day are spent doing fun, engaging, hands-on activities with partner organizations, including the Vero Beach Museum of Art and the Ocean Research and Conservation Association.

Summer Moonshot Academy doubled in size over the last two years. This year, 232 students from nine schools are enrolled in programming across three sites.

Our program is designed to help students and families feel confident in their learning and abilities and continue building their reading skills, while still giving them a summer break. We also have intentionally spread our service sites through the community to help families better access the programs.

And it’s working. On average, participants show 50% more reading proficiency growth than their peers not in the program.

We hope to keep expanding this program, so every student who needs it will be able to access it in the future. You can help! Donate today.
