Reading is Everyone’s Business
Overview: The role of a volunteer In-School Reading Tutor provides support to children in a school environment. You will work on a 1-2-1 basis or with a small group of 3-4 children at a time. Depending on the school to which you are assigned, you may be situated in a classroom at your own table, in a separate classroom adjacent to the teaching room, or in an outdoor courtyard setting.
Commitment: To ensure consistency in the delivery of the tutoring program, as well as maximizing the impact of tutoring, you will be asked to commit to one day per week, at a set time, to attend your volunteer role. Days are flexible, therefore they can fit around other commitments you may have, but time slots are communicated to us by each individual school, to specifically meet the needs of the children, the support of the teachers, and to minimize disruption to the daily schedule of the class.
In most instances your volunteer In-School Reading Tutor commitment will be for 1.5 hours, every week. It is important to understand that this commitment is for an academic year. If you are a permanent resident, it may be possible to start tutoring in October. Seasonal residents will be placed at schools to start in December or January. In all instances, you will be required to commit to tutoring until the end of April.
Training: You will be invited to attend a 2-hour training session, at The Learning Alliance offices, during which you will be presented with the curriculum being used in schools, the program devised by The Learning Alliance, and the activities by which the tutoring will be delivered. You will be provided with a “Learning Kit” that you will take with you to your designated school, to carry out your volunteer role. On going support will always be available by contacting the Volunteer Coordinator and group refresher training or best practice sessions will be organized periodically.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- To evaluate children’s reading levels and provide tailored support.
- To offer reading instruction and guidance to improve literacy skills.
- To track children’s reading progress and adjust support as needed.
- To work alongside school staff and other volunteers to create a supportive reading environment.
- To keep information about children and their families confidential and secure.
- To follow all school protocols for Health & Safety and be familiar with all emergency procedures and drills.
Requirements:
Your volunteer position will be subject to a completed security check involving fingerprinting, from which a contractor’s badge will be provided to you, to allow for you to access school properties efficiently. This check, once completed, is valid for 5 years. Please note that there is a cost of approximately $85 for the completion of this process, which we hope you would consider a donation towards the work we do.
In essence, volunteer In-School Reading Tutors play a crucial role in enhancing children’s literacy skills and helping them develop a love for reading. You will form part of a team effort to provide comprehensive literacy support and contribute to the overall success of the children, the school and The Learning Alliance.
Overview: The role of a volunteer Substitute In-School Reading Tutor provides support to children in a school environment. You will work on a 1-2-1 basis or with a small group of 3-4 children at a time. Depending on the school to which you are assigned, you may be situated in a classroom at your own table, in a separate classroom adjacent to the teaching room, or in an outdoor courtyard setting.
Commitment: To ensure consistency in the delivery of the tutoring program, as well as maximizing the impact of tutoring, you will be asked to provide the most convenient day(s) for which you can be contacted, to assist with filling a vacant spot, should it arise. Days are flexible, therefore they can fit around other commitments you may have, but time slots are communicated to us by each individual school, to specifically meet the needs of the children, the support of the teachers, and to minimize disruption to the daily schedule of the class.

You will form part of a team effort to provide comprehensive literacy support and contribute to the overall success of the children, the school and The Learning Alliance.
Overview: The role of a volunteer Community Outreach Representative provides support to The Learning Alliance by helping to build relationships between our organization and the community. Depending on the event, you may be tasked with representing The Learning Alliance by staffing a booth or stand, handing out literature, promoting the work we do, supporting with hands-on activities, and data collection if required.
Commitment: A calendar of community events, for which The Learning Alliance will be present, will be organized each year and will be communicated via signup.com to all volunteers. Volunteers will be able to select an event based on date, time and responsibility.
In most cases, we will attempt to ensure that a volunteer spot at a Community Outreach event will be no longer than 3 hours.
Training: While no formal training is usually required for events of this type, you will receive instructions on the day of the event. The signup communication will outline your role and responsibilities ahead of time and the Volunteer Coordinator will be able to answer questions. Should your role require the use of technology or a particular software system, you will be trained accordingly. You should also take some time to familiarize yourself with the organization in terms of the programs we offer, the support we give to schools, the Moonshot Academy after school program, our partner organizations and overall mission.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- To support in establishing and maintaining relationships with community leaders, organizations and potential partners to enhance collaboration and support.
- To promote the work we do by handing out relevant organizational literature, promoting opportunities to become involved with The Learning Alliance and answering questions.
- To assist children with crafts and/or learning activities when required.
- To collect data on attendance, community feedback, and potential leads for partnership.
Requirements:
Your volunteer position will be on an ad-hoc basis, dependent upon The Learning Alliance’s participation in community run events. Events can be located across Indian River County, meaning that you may need to travel to be able to participate in a volunteer capacity. You will ideally have strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
Overview: The role of a volunteer Special Events Assistant provides support to The Learning Alliance by attending and assisting with various tasks at large-scale events, such as the Wired To Learn Fast Summit.
Commitment: Any special events will be communicated to all volunteers via signup.com, where you will be able to view the event specifics, dates, times and the various different job roles and responsibilities.
In most cases, we will attempt to ensure that a volunteer spot at a Special Event will be no longer than 3 hours.
Training: While no formal training is usually required for events of this type, you will receive instructions prior to, as well as on the day of the event. The signup communication will outline your role and responsibilities ahead of time and the Volunteer Coordinator will be able to answer questions. Should your role require the use of technology or a particular software system, you will be trained accordingly.

- To support in the overall experience of attendees by providing outstanding customer service in any of the following roles:
- Set-Up
- Parking Attendant
- Greeter
- Check-In/Registration
- Information Booth/Help Desk
- Presentation Timekeeper
- Hospitality
- Break-Down/Clean Up

Your volunteer position will be on an ad-hoc basis, dependent upon The Learning Alliance’s schedule. Events can be located across Indian River County, meaning that you may need to travel to be able to participate in a volunteer capacity. You will ideally have strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
Overview: The role of a Learning Kit Assembly Assistant provides support to The Learning Alliance by compiling the kit bags at a “Learning Kit Assembly Party” that volunteers use in schools, to carry out reading tutoring sessions, as well as other community programs.
Commitment: All “Kit Assembly Parties” will be communicated to all volunteers via signup.com, where you will be able to view the event specifics including date and time.
Kit Assembly Parties will take place as and when needed at The Learning Alliances offices in Downtown. Depending on the number of kits required and the contents, the parties may vary in length, however we anticipate that in almost all circumstances, you should allow 2 hours of your time to dedicate to this activity.
Training: While no formal training is required for Learning Kit Assembly, you will receive instructions upon arrival at the party. The signup communication will outline your role and responsibilities ahead of time and the Volunteer Coordinator will be able to answer questions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- To support in the overall success of the reading tutoring program and other
- Community programs, by accurately compiling learning kit bags.
- To work diligently, ensuring accurate completion of all learning kits.
- To prepare individual activities to include in learning kits.
Requirements:
Your volunteer position will be on an ad-hoc basis, dependent upon The Learning Alliance’s schedule. This activity will involve you working as part of a team, with other volunteers, to accomplish the specified task. You will ideally have a good eye for detail and be able to work methodically and diligently.
